Live ticker Steve Lennon – Mervyn King 0: 4 (PDC Darts World Cup 2022, 3rd round)

14:40

King is in the round of 16

After the transformed match dart, Mervyn King blows deeply. With an average of 92 points and a good 31% on the doubles, the Englishman really did not show his A-Game today. Nevertheless, it was enough to achieve a smooth 4-0 win because his opponent Steve Lennon sank five of his 37 darts on double fields (13.5%). The Irishman has finished work, the King meets Hempel-defeated Raymond Smith in the round of 16.

14:37

The first match dart is sitting

Steve Lennon plays another solid throw-off and has two chances to win the set, but misses both D20 and D10. Mervyn King stands at eight points and chases the first match dart right into the double-4.

14:34

compensation

At his own throw, King turns up again and starts with 177. After nine arrows, the 55-year-old has 101 points and makes the cool over 25, T20 and D8. It goes into the decider!

14:33

King stays tuned

Steve Lennon can’t use the first chance to win a set. Mervyn King finds some good shots again and almost lands a 164 high finish, but only hits the little Bull after T20 and T18. Since his opponent cannot counter, the Englishman then checks on D4 to 2-1 and stays in the set.

14:31

In the madhouse for 2-0

Furthermore, the level in this match is very manageable. Both players are on average below 90 points and have a particularly difficult time checking out. Lennon sprints towards a break chance with two 140s, but then again misses D10 and D5. King turns 40 and puts pressure on, but this time the Irishman stands up and scores the 2-0 in the Madhouse.

14:28

The horror continues

Slowly but surely Steve Lennon himself can no longer believe it. Again he can’t manage 40 counters with three fresheners and prefers to close his eyes than he goes to the board. King does not punish this this time and may miss the preliminary decision. Lennon’s fifth legdart lands in double five.

14:26

Suddenly King turns up

Out of nowhere, Mervyn King suddenly plays dream darts! One after the other, the 55-year-old chases 171 and 177 points into the board and then deletes the remaining 72 points over 16, T16 and D4 for twelve-darters and for winning the set. 3-0 for the King!

14:24

3 of 24 doubles at Lennon

Steve Lennon and the double fields … The scoring is slowly increasing with the Irish, but after three more mistakes, the checkout shows a lousy 12.5%. Mervyn King is by no means playing his A-Game here, but is often there at the crucial moment. This time the King D10 pins for 2: 1.

14:22

Easy come easy go

Inspired by winning the first, Steve Lennon went up well, landed a chic 168 and turned 40 after twelve darts. But then “Scuba Steve” couldn’t manage with nine arrows and this time it was King who was also having a hard time. but ultimately D2 hits for an immediate rebreak. this is a very weak phase for both of them here.

14:18

Double trouble

King also comes in better in the third set and is first in the finishing area. Then the Englishman suddenly can’t make out 40 points with a whopping nine darts and Steve Lennon, who still scores poorly, crawls up again. The Irishman also gives away some legdarts, but then hits D4 to make it 1-0.

14:10

Too little of Lennon

Steve Lennon doesn’t give the impression that he could endanger Mervyn King here. “Scuba Steve” scores poorly, fails to hit his doubles and stares at the ground a little aghast while the King pounds his next 180 into the board. The Englishman misses three set darts, but can easily afford it and then pins D6 to lead the set 2-0.

14:08

In a roundabout way to 1: 2

Steve Lennon then actually plays a really sovereign throw-off, but hits double 14 instead of the targeted big 14 and has only 26 points instead of 40 points. After several unsuccessful attempts on D13, the Irishman has to rebuild and ultimately makes 13 points above 5 and D4 just before King catches up with him.

14:06

No high finish, but the 2-0

In the second leg, both have the chance of a high finish and each just fail. King misses the final bullseye for 121, Lennon misses double 8 for 136 after two triple 20 hits. King then clears his remaining 25 points over 9 and D8 and takes his fourth leg in a row.

14:04

King keeps on steaming

After the first short break, Steve Lennon is allowed to open the second set, but it is difficult to get out of the starting blocks. Mervyn King, on the other hand, pegs a 140 and a 180 into the board and runs away. Then the Englishman checks 100 points cool with two darts on tops and lands a break immediately.

13:57

With the first 180 to the sentence

Slowly but surely, King gets going and drills his first maximum into the window. The 55-year-old races ahead and faces 24 remainder of the sentence. Lennon counters again on 124, but misses the decisive double-11 after two perfect darts in T20 and T14. King hits D12 on the second attempt and grabs the first round!

13:55

King submits again

Steve Lennon scores a bit more solidly so far and has his second break opportunity. The Irishman can’t even begin to make out the second highest possible finish of 167. Mervyn King comes back to the oche at 87 and erases the perfect over triple 17 and double 18.

13:52

Lots of slip-ups

Mervyn King is still struggling with scoring and slips his arrows several times into 1 and 3 when he aims at 20 and 19. This time Lennon can calmly face tops and seal the equalizer.

13:50

Both start strong

Both actors are at operating temperature right from the start. Lennon fired a 140 into the board in his first shot, King replied with a first 140, but then only got the triple one twice. So the Irishman has a break chance right away, but cannot bring 103. The King turns 40 rest and packs the first leg with the third dart.

13:46

Game on!

Up front and clear the stage! While the last notes of Motörhead’s “King of kings” fade away, Mervyn King joins Steve Lennon on stage and the two fire a few more practice darts into the board. “Scuba Steve” is allowed to open the first match of the day in a few moments. Game on!

13:39

The mode

This third round is played in the “Best of 7” mode. So you have to win four sets to get into the round of 16. You need three legs to win a set. In one possible decision set, the two-clear-legs rule is applied. Only when the score was 5: 5 would there be a sudden death leg.

13:31

The King: Mervyn King

At 55 years of age, the “King” is one of the most experienced players ever in this World Cup field. For a long time, the BDO vice world champion of 2002 and 2004 seemed to have had his best time behind him, but recently King got back on track. At the beginning of the year he reached the final of the Masters for the second time since 2014, where he lost to Jonny Clayton. The Englishman played his best PDC World Championship in 2009 when he made it to the semi-finals. The start to this World Cup was bumpy. Only after 0: 2 set deficit King turned up against Ryan Joyce and still prevailed.

13:23

“Scuba Steve” Lennon

Steve Lennon is currently the second best Irishman in the Order of Merit of the PDC as number 52. He celebrated his greatest success in 2019 at the World Cup of Darts, when he and Willie O’Connor reached his first and to date only major final. In the current season, the 28-year-old has reached two quarter-finals on the Player Championship Tour, but otherwise didn’t tear much. But this time things are going well at the World Cup. After two 3-1 wins against Latvian Madars Razma and seeded Poland’s Krzysztof Ratajski, Lennon is in the third round for the first time.

13:13

Round of 16 without German participation

Since yesterday it has been clear that the round of 16 at the biggest darts spectacle of the year will once again take place without German participation. After newcomers Fabian Schmutzler and Martin Schindler, Germany’s top players said goodbye in round three yesterday. Florian Hempel lost 4-1 to Raymond Smith, Gabriel Clemens had no chance in the 4-0 defeat of Jonny Clayton. Defending champion Gerwyn Price almost got the first really big name, but the “Iceman” stayed cool in the sudden death leg against Kim Huybrechts and hit Tops with the last arrow to win.

13:03
