What is there to do in Drenthe this weekend?

Listen to fairy tales, cuddle a horse, drink a specialty beer or meet residents of the asylum seekers’ center; that’s all possible this weekend in Drenthe. Below is a selection of the range of outings in our province.

Meppel will be dominated by Table in the Garden on Saturday. In the districts of Koekijkslanden, Berggierslanden and Slingenberg, there are tables in the garden at dozens of addresses with the most diverse products. From homemade jam to children’s clothing and from toys to cuttings. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Look at the website for all addresses.
Lovers of a specialty beer can visit the Grote Kerk in Emmen on Saturday. There are more than 50 types of beer from northern breweries to taste. There is also a number of food trucks where, among other things, German bratwurst is available. The proceeds of the festival go to a good cause. From 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tickets can be ordered via the website.
Fairy tales are for all ages and not just for kids. That is why De Sprookjestuinen van Drenthe is organizing an adult edition on Saturday 24 September. A day full of fairy tales that are just a bit more exciting than the children’s stories. With performances, workshops, music and snacks and drinks in the garden of Dwingelderheem near Dwingeloo. On Saturday many asylum seekers’ centers in the Netherlands open their doors as part of Neighbors Day. In Drenthe you can take a look at the asylum seekers’ centers in Hoogeveen, Assen and Emmen. You can meet residents of the asylum seekers’ center and get an impression of daily life in an asylum seekers’ centre. There are guided tours, workshops and children’s activities. On Saturday and Sunday, Boerentrots Westerveld organizes a bicycle tour along (organic) dairy farmers, farm shops, beekeepers and fruit and vegetable growers. Every farmer has his own story and his own way of working. They are proud of their products and passionately tell their story. There are two different routes, one of 39 kilometers and one of 25 kilometers. The shortest route is also suitable for children, including a flower and fruit picking garden, terraces with ice cream and a maze along the way. In Orvelte Sunday is the day of the horse. There will be various shows and demonstrations. On the main meadow there are, among other things, demonstrations of freedom dressage, demonstration of the Frisian horse ballet, of course you can also cuddle with a horse or pony.
At several places in the village there will be activities that have a link with the horse. Children can experience what it is like to ride a pony under supervision. From 10.30 am to 5 pm, adults pay 5 euros entrance, children from 5 to 16 years old 2.50 euros.

Don’t feel like going out this weekend? Then you can always participate in the national hedgehog count. The number of hedgehogs in the Netherlands has been decreasing in recent years, partly due to the drought. To see where hedgehogs live, the mammal society asks everyone to report hedgehog sightings. Therefore, pay attention to whether you see a hedgehog in your garden this weekend, especially at dusk, and pass it on via www.tuintelling.nl.
