Roeselare 3 years after elections: no extra taxes, but adjust plans

The legislature is over: Roeselare takes stock. That is, says the city of itself, positive. But the challenges have not been minor lately. First came the corona crisis, now energy prices have shot up to record highs. So more costs: due to indexation, wages will rise five times this year, road works will be more expensive due to more expensive raw material prices and the corona crisis is not yet over when Welzijn added an extra need for shelter for Ukrainians.

Road works postponed

The question is how Roeselare will pay for this. Not with additional taxes: they remain the same. Instead, the city will adjust or even postpone plans, which should yield almost 19 million euros. Road works are postponed and the city is reconsidering non-urgent maintenance works. At the same time, the city is coming up with an energy plan: heating to 19 degrees, research into where street lighting can be used and an accelerated switch to LED light on the street and in city buildings.

The construction of the new town hall, extra greenery and this remarkable connection between the Sterrebos and the Bergmolenbos will continue. Roeselare also wants to continue to tackle child poverty and poverty in general with a poverty plan.
