London (AP) – The Danish national player Christian Eriksen is back in the football business more than half a year after his dramatic collapse at the European Championship – and is playing in the Premier League again.
As expected, the 29-year-old signed on with English promoted FC Brentford, as the London club announced. According to this, Eriksen, who was recently without a contract, signed a contract until next summer after passing the medical check. Only the international release is still pending, it said. Nothing was initially known about an option for another year, as previously reported in the British media.
Eriksen had previously undergone extensive medical examinations at Brentford. He collapsed from cardiac arrest during the group stage match against Finland at last June’s European Championship and had to be resuscitated. He was then fitted with a defibrillator. His contract with Inter Milan was terminated because he was not allowed to play in the Italian Serie A with a defibrillator.
Under the Danish Brentford coach Thomas Frank, Eriksen played in the Danish U17s as a youth. “I’m delighted to be working with Christian again,” said Frank. “It’s been a while since I’ve coached him, a lot has happened since then. He was 16 then and he went on to become one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.”
Eriksen played for Tottenham Hotspur in England from 2013 to 2020. He played more than 300 games for Spurs. From there he moved to Inter Milan, where he was unable to continue playing despite an ongoing contract.
