Ajax’s new Champions League adventure is about to begin. With the exception of Owen Wijndal, trainer Alfred Schreuder starts with a fit selection in the opening match against Rangers FC of trainer Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
Wijndal made his last minutes for Ajax in the league match in mid-August against FC Groningen (6-1). After that, the former captain of AZ against Sparta (0-1) on the bench, but then was unable to play due to an injury. Wijndal is currently not training with the group either.
At the press conference this afternoon, Daley Blind told that Ajax has actually had a long preparation on its way to the billion-dollar ball. Although the national champion went into the Johan Cruijff Scale against PSV hard down, but in the Eredivisie the score is one hundred percent. “We are really looking forward to the game against Rangers. Then it will become clear how we really stand,” said Blind.
The fact that Ajax can no longer have players such as Haller, Antony and Martinez in the Champions League is a fact that does not keep Blind awake. “When boys make a nice transfer, there are also new boys. That will always be the case at Ajax. I am very curious. In the competition we create a lot and give away little, that gives a lot of confidence. It just says nothing for tomorrow’s game, because the Champions League is another level.”
Ajax – Rangers FC starts tomorrow evening at 6.45 pm. Tobias Stieler is the referee. The German last whistled for Ajax in 2020 in the 1-0 won home match against Liverpool.
