Europa League squad: The nominees at Union Berlin and SC Freiburg

Cologne in ECL without Andersson

Some prominent names are missing from the 1. FC Union Berlin squad for the group stage of the Europa League. The newcomers Paul Seguin (27) and Milos Pantovic (32) are not among the 24 professionals nominated by coach Urs Fischer on the “A list”. Especially in midfield, the “iron” are very broad. Levin Öztunali (26) and Kevin Möhwald (29) did not make it into the squad either. In addition to central defender Timo Baumgartl (26), who is still recovering after his cancer, goalkeeper Jakob Busk (28) is also missing.

Fischer called only 24 players, 25 would be possible. However, UEFA stipulates that four of the eight so-called “local players” must have been trained in their own youth. At Union there are only three: goalkeeper Yannic Stein (17) and midfielders Aljoscha Kemlein (18) and Tim Maciejewski (21). That’s why the Köpenickers are only allowed to nominate 24 professionals. Theoretically, however, Fischer can still bring in young players who were born on or after January 1, 2001 and between their 15th birthday and registration with UEFA via the “B-list”, which can be drawn up anew before each matchday have played for the club for two consecutive years.

On Thursday (6:45 p.m. / RTL +) Union starts in the first Europa League game in the An der Alten Försterei stadium against Royale Union Saint Gilloise from Belgium in the group phase. It starts a little later for the second German representative: at 21:00 (RTL) SC Freiburg meets Qarabağ FK from Azerbaijan in the Europa Park Stadium.

SC Freiburg in Europa League with Vermeij & Hoti – 17-year-old Toure in the Cologne squad

Coach Christian Streich can draw on his entire squad, and the 57-year-old can nominate talents who are not on the “A list” such as Kiliann Sildillia (20) or Kevin Schade (20) via the “B list”. This offers space for two players from the reserve: striker Vincent Vermeij (28) and defensive talent Andi Hoti (19), loaned from Inter Milan, are in the Freiburg squad.

There are no big surprises in the 1. FC Köln squad in the Europa Conference League either. In addition to Dimitrios Limnios (24), who is suffering from a cruciate ligament rupture, Sebastian Andersson (31) is also missing. Since Mathias Olesen (21) is on the “B list”, 17-year-old Tidiane Toure, who only signed from the Holstein Kiel offspring in the summer, can hope for a commitment that is firmly on the “A list”. On Thursday (6:45 p.m.) the Cologne team will first go to the OGC Nice.
