Defense has deployed a second helicopter with a Chinook to get the large wildfire in De Peel under control. Since this morning, a Cougar transport helicopter has been dropping water on the flames.
Firefighters have been putting out the fire since 6.30am. At that time, about 2 hectares of nature were ablaze. That is now 20 hectares.
Both air force helicopters are equipped with a so-called bambi bucket with which water is scooped up. A Chinook can carry 4 times as much water as a Cougar.
Earlier this month
Earlier this month, Defense already helped fight a dune fire at Brouwersdam. At the time, the Cougar dropped approximately 62,500 liters of water in 2 hours. That happened in 25 drops.
