US Open: Last year’s round of 16 Gojowczyk fails early

Last year’s round of 16, Peter Gojowczyk, is over at the US Open after the first round.

The 33-year-old from Munich lost to Danish top talent Holger Rune on Tuesday in New York 2: 6, 4: 6, 6: 7 (5: 7). Maximilian Marterer also has to pack his things. The qualifier from Nuremberg lost to Marin Cilic, tournament winner from 2014, 3:6, 2:6, 5:7.

Gojowczyk had achieved his best performance in a Grand Slam tournament last year by reaching the round of 16. The veteran improved significantly against Rune after the first set and challenged his opponent more. Rune, seeded at position 28, ultimately proved too strong. Marterer meanwhile failed for the fourth time in the first round of New York.

Oscar Otte (Cologne), Germany’s number one in the absence of the injured Olympic champion Alexander Zverev, and Daniel Altmaier (Kempen) are also required on Tuesday.
