Fruit flies in the house: this is how you get rid of them

The sun is shining, the mercury is rising and there they are again, fruit flies in the house. They are attracted to overripe fruit or fruit with bruises and if you are not careful, there will be a whole swarm in your kitchen and it can just become a plague. How do you get rid of the fruit flies? So!

Hide your fruit
The name says it all, fruit flies love fruit. Therefore, put your fruit in the refrigerator. Tropical fruits such as bananas and pineapple do not tolerate the cold, so put them away under a fly hood so that the flies cannot reach them.

Chase them away with basil or garlic
Place a fragrant herb near your fruit, such as basil or sage. Fruit flies don’t like that smell. Or put some cloves, cloves of garlic or sprigs of lavender between the fruit.

Trap them
You can buy traps against fruit flies in the store, but you can easily make a trap yourself. Take a small plastic container with a lid and put something with sugar or yeast in it, such as honey, overripe fruit or syrup. Poke a small hole in the lid. This causes the flies to crawl in, but after that they can no longer find their way out and are stuck in the trap.

Put the flowers outside
Remove dead leaves and wilted flowers, as that is also a breeding ground for the flies. In any case, don’t leave a bunch of flowers too long.

Countertop clean
Make sure to clean your counter, table or hob right away and rinse dirty glasses. Do not use a fruit-scented cleaner, such as lemon, as that will attract them back.

Just go for a ride
Open the windows or doors against each other, because fruit flies do not like drafts.

fond of vinegar
A small bowl of vinegar (white wine vinegar is also possible) and a drop of dishwashing liquid works wonders. The flies will soon come to it and will drown themselves in it.

Sweet and sour silver onions
Another smell that the flies cannot resist, that of sweet and sour pearl onions. With a little of that moisture in a jar with a lid, you’ll have them all caught in no time.
