Annika Zeyen perfected her title hat-trick in the road race at the World Cycling Championships in Baie-Comeau, Canada.
The 37-year-old hand biker triumphed on Sunday (14.08.2022) after 56.7 kilometers in 1:56:47 hours and was crowned world champion for the third time after 2019 and 2021 in the road race. The former wheelchair basketball player had also previously secured the title in the individual time trial in Canada.
“One dreams of such a success, but so much can happen”said Zeyen, who collected all the major titles this year with two gold medals at the European Championships and the overall World Cup: “One mistake or technical defect – and it’s over. It’s just great that everything worked out here. I’m really happy.”
Majunke also defended her title
In addition to Zeyen, tricycle rider Jana Majunke also successfully defended her title. The two-time Paralympic winner from Tokyo prevailed in the T2 class road race ahead of her teammate Angelika Dreock-Käser.
In the individual time trial, the 55-year-old Dreock-Käser had triumphed at the start of the World Championships, her 31-year-old colleague Majunke had finished third. “It was a tough but nice race. We were able to keep the competition away from us from the start. Angelika and I worked well together. I’m very happy about the world championship title,” said Majunke.
In the road races for tricycles, Maximilian Jäger also took bronze on the hilly route. “I’m proud that I was able to keep up with the front runners right up to the end,” said the 22-year-old.
Already seven gold medals
Before the final day, the team from the German Disabled Sports Association had already won gold seven times, silver twice and bronze twice.
