West Flanders most popular with young people who want to buy a house

In the top 10 of the municipalities are no fewer than 5 West Flemish municipalities, mainly from the south of the province: Harelbeke, Poperinge, Izegem, Wevelgem, and Zwevegem, each with more than 40% young buyers.

This is the West Flemish top ten of municipalities where young people most often buy a house (+ the average price they pay):

  • Harelbeke: 44% (247,500 euros)
  • Poperinge: 43% (237,616 euros)
  • Izegem: 43% (220,000 euros)
  • Wevelgem: 42% (231,500 euros)
  • Zwevegem: 41% (245,000 euros)
  • Kortrijk: 41% (249,500 euros)
  • Zedelgem: 40% (337,500 euros)
  • Waregem: 36% (285,020 euros)
  • Torhout: 33% (315,000 euros)
  • Oostkamp: 33% (302,500 euros)

In front of apartments our province is not that popular. With 14%, West Flanders is even behind. Older buyers are mainly active here, including on the coast. Most young people buy an apartment in larger cities such as Kortrijk, Bruges, Roeselare and Ostend.

Prices

The median price of a house bought by young people in the first six months of this year was 275,000 euros. Just below the general median price of a house in Belgium (280,000 euros), but higher than the amount that young people paid in 2021 (255,000 euros). Prices in the south of the province are on average lower than in the north. The median price for an apartment among young people was 224,000 euros. Again close to the median price of a Belgian apartment in 2022 (230,867 euros) and higher than what young people paid in 2021 (215,000 euros).
