US basketball player Brittney Griner, who is in prison in Russia, will apparently soon find out what punishment awaits her. The verdict will be “very soon,” said Maria Blagowolina, a member of the 31-year-old’s legal team, on Tuesday.

Griner hopes “that she will be able to go home at some point, and we hope so too,” said Blagowolina. However, she and her colleagues are not involved in the negotiations about a possible prisoner exchange between the USA and Russia, which could save Griner from remaining in prison.

Griner was also in court on Tuesday. She was led into the hall in handcuffs and placed in a cage. The next appointment is scheduled for Thursday.

Griner has to answer in Chimki for violating national drug laws and faces up to ten years in prison. The two-time Olympic champion was arrested at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport in February after security forces found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage. Griner pleaded guilty at the beginning of the trial.
