EM in England | National coach: “I was always very dominant”

National coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg has acknowledged a change in her dealings with the German national team and also within her coaching staff.

“We first had to be clear about ourselves before we demand clarity from the players. It’s a process we all went through,” said the 54-year-old in a media interview at the European Football Championship.

Voss-Tecklenburg has been training the DFB women since the end of 2018 after six years with the Swiss association and was eliminated with her team at the 2019 World Cup in the quarter-finals. At the European Championships in England on July 27 (9:00 p.m. CEST/ZDF and DAZN), the DFB women will play against France for a place in the final. “As a trainer, I mostly traveled alone, in Switzerland with my assistant trainer for a long time,” said Voss-Tecklenburg. “I was always very dominant. I wanted to do everything alone as a coach, from start to finish.”

A well-established support team

She now leads a support team. This consists of her confidante Britta Carlson and the other assistants Thomas Nörenberg, Patrik Grolimund, Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker and goalkeeping coach Michael Fuchs. “It was also a process for me, and Britta accompanied me in many moments,” said Voss-Tecklenburg. “This quality here from those responsible for sport, it’s so good and well-established. That gives me much more security as a coach.”
