Testicular Cancer Diagnosis
Marco Richter (24) from Hertha BSC is spared chemotherapy after his testicular cancer diagnosis. “After tiring days of worrying and thinking, I got the good news…the tumor was malignant but was successfully removed and I don’t need chemotherapy and will be able to fully recover soon,” wrote judges on Wednesday evening Instagram.
The Berliners had previously announced that the malignant tumor was discovered so early that “follow-up treatment with chemotherapy is not necessary”. “We are all incredibly happy to have received this positive news. We will now give Marco the necessary rest after his operation and look forward to seeing him back on the pitch in two to three weeks,” said Hertha manager Fredi Bobic.
The winger, who moved from FC Augsburg to Berlin in 2021, thanked him: “It was incredible how my teammates, Sandro Schwarz, Fredi Bobic, Kay Bernstein and the whole club helped me”. He received messages from former teammates and opponents, “received encouragement and fingers crossed from friends and strangers, of course also from my family. It was madness.”
Judge: “Get checked out and don’t play tough”
At the same time, Richter and Bobic gave encouragement to the recently ill professionals Timo Baumgartl (26) from Union Berlin and BVB access Sébastien Haller (28). “We at Hertha BSC also hope that both Timo Baumgartl and Sébastien Haller will end up with a good outcome from this illness and that they can return to the football field as quickly as possible,” said Bobic. Richter wrote: “I wish Timo Baumgartl and Sébastien Haller all the best from the bottom of my heart. You will soon be back on the field.”
At the same time, Richter advocated more precautions: “And if I may say one thing… get checked up regularly and don’t play tough. The early visit to the doctor was my great luck!”
