The 22-year-old man who has been detained in connection with the death of a six-month-old baby in Rotterdam is the father of the child, the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee reported on Tuesday. The baby was killed in a stabbing incident on Sunday. How exactly that happened is not yet clear. According to the military police, traces of violence have been found on the child’s body.
The incident at the Wolphaertsbocht in South Rotterdam took place around 5.15 pm. The victim was taken to hospital but did not survive the stabbing. The suspect was arrested not long after.
Because the 22-year-old man is active in the military, the Marechaussee has taken over the investigation. The Large-Scale Investigation Team is working on the case, a spokesperson said.
The criminal investigation into the death of the child is in full swing, according to the Marechaussee. The man is an IT worker in the army and had “mental problems for some time”, his mother told the AD.
