He’s a two-time world footballer, six-time top scorer in the Bundesliga and in the form of his life. But: Lewandowski will be close to his 35th birthday when the contract ends in 2023. Giving him a blank contract until 2026 or 2027 is not Bayern-like, but foolish.
Why? Because Lewandowski is the top earner in the league with an annual salary of around 24 million euros. He has to justify this fee year after year – just like various other privileges that cannot be taken for granted.
It’s not entirely his fault that, after scoring his 300th Bundesliga goal, he even has the chance to surpass Gerd Müller’s all-time record of 365 goals. With Thomas Müller, Lewandowski has the best preparer in league history behind him, as well as ingenious assist providers such as Sané and Coman.
They not only help with the personal record hunt, but also with the search for titles. Nowhere else could Lewandowski have won so many trophies in recent years – and nowhere would he have such a good chance of winning more in the next two or three years. If Lewandowski isn’t willing to sign one of Bayern’s generous offers, then a summer sale shouldn’t be taboo. Especially if Haaland, who is twelve years younger, is still on the market.
