Diede de Groot won Wimbledon for the fourth time in her career on Saturday. The wheelchair tennis player won a Grand Slam tournament for the eighth time in a row, bringing her total Grand Slam titles to fifteen.
In the Wimbledon final, 25-year-old De Groot as the top favorite had little to fear from Yui Kamiji, the number two on the placement list. She defeated the Japanese 6-4 and 6-2 on the London grass.
De Groot took her first Grand Slam title in 2017 by winning Wimbledon. Since then, fourteen more overall victories have followed at the four largest tournaments. Only at the Australian Open and Roland Garros in 2020 she did not reach the final.
Last year, De Groot was the first wheelchair tennis player to win a Golden Slam, winning all Grand Slam tournaments and a Paralympic gold in one year. She may win all Grand Slams again this season. The US Open awaits later this year.
On Sunday, De Groot can also take her fifteenth Grand Slam title in doubles. Together with Aniek van Koot, she will face Kamiji and the American Dana Mathewson in the final.
A Dutch title in wheelchair tennis singles may follow later this weekend. Nineteen-year-old top favorite Niels Vink qualified for the men’s final on Saturday by beating Australian Heath Davidson 7-6 (7) and 6-1.
