“We did not ask why people walk more, but given that we see the number of walking kilometers increase in both 2020 and 2021, we assume that this played an important role. We now do more on foot,” says Marjolijn Jaarsma. of the CBS.
In total, we covered 168.4 billion kilometers last year. That is 11 percent more than in 2020, but a quarter less than before the corona crisis. We traveled most often by car, mainly to get to work. The number of kilometers for personal care, for example the hairdresser, increased by a fifth compared to 2020, but was at the same level as in 2019.
Furthermore, we covered 58 percent fewer kilometers by train than before corona and we cycled considerably less (10 percent).
