FC Barcelona has refrained from signing the Catalan Elvis Coca as the new chief scout for the youth department because of nine-year-old tweets.
“An important person at Barca called me and told me that they were no longer interested in me because of these tweets,” Coca, who last worked for second division club CD Mirandes, told radio station RAC 1.
When Barcelona’s interest in Coca became known earlier in the week, fans pointed out the tweets from the now-deleted account. In it, Coca repeatedly expressed sympathy for Barca’s arch-rivals Real Madrid. “How I would love to see Luis Suarez at Real,” he wrote for example in 2012 about the striker, who later joined Barca.
Coca reacted disappointed to the cancellation. He “can’t even remember those tweets,” he said: “Barca is a club I admire. I’m losing an opportunity that I’ll probably never get again.”
