Williams has developed new parts for its FW44 in Formula 1 at its base in Grove, UK. The new aerodynamics are to be used at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, but only on Alexander Albon’s car. Nicolas Latifi will continue to use the older specification.
The traditional racing team had planned to give up the red lantern again with the introduction of the new Formula 1 rules in 2022, but so far the team has not really made progress. Albon, who came in to replace George Russell, has picked up three points so far while Latifi has gone empty-handed.
The new update is intended to increase the competitiveness of the FW44: a new underbody was developed for this and the bodywork was also adapted. So it should be possible for Albon to fight for points at Silverstone. The Briton with Thai roots alone gets the package installed to confirm that the update is bearing fruit, according to Williams development chief Dave Robson.
He says: “The body and underbody form the basis of the upgrade and are designed to efficiently increase the car’s downforce. We’re looking forward to our home race and will try to understand the new parts. They will change the balance and handling of the car, so it will take drivers some time to get the most out of it.”
Silverstone a challenge for the new Formula 1 cars
Silverstone is considered a real challenge for the new Formula 1 cars as the fast corners put the focus on downforce. According to Robson, the circuit is also very hard on the tires, so tire wear and management will also play an important role. He will therefore look for a way to set the car up for the conditions as best as possible.
“The front left tires are under a lot of stress because of the fast right-hand corners,” explains the Williams technical expert. “So you have to be careful in these corners and use the aerodynamic and mechanical balance so that they support each other. This way you can prevent the left front tire from wearing out too quickly.”
