Ski jumping: Andreas Wellinger and Steffen Freund not in the German Olympic team for Beijing – ski jumping – winter sports

As Olympic debutants, Constantin Schmid and Pius Paschke were the last German ski jumpers to be nominated for the Winter Games in Beijing. For Andreas Wellinger and Steffen Freund, however, the dream of the Olympics has burst.

The sports management around national coach Stefan Horngacher reported youngster Schmid and the 32-year-old veteran Paschke to the DOSB when the deadline expired on Sunday morning (January 23, 2022). “Constantin is consistently jumping a good season and has always had good results,” said Horngacher, explaining the 22-year-old’s nomination.

The top jumpers Karl Geiger and Markus Eisenbichler as well as Stephan Leyhe had already been appointed to the five-strong men’s team.

Positive corona test at Wellinger

Wellinger, who has just returned to the team after knee problems, tested positive for Corona on Friday before qualifying for the World Cup in Titisee-Neustadt, but according to his statement, the CT value was just below the usual limit of 30 in Germany.

As a rule, the lower the CT value, the higher the viral load in the body. At the Winter Games in Beijing, however, 40 is set as the limit, leaving Wellinger with question marks.

Friend missed last chance

Of the competitors for the last starting places, only Schmid was able to score points in the last competition on Saturday in the Black Forest, which was decisive for the nomination and finished eighth.

Experienced friend Freund, who only joined the World Cup team for the Four Hills Tournament, missed the second top 15 place required to meet the norm when he was 17th. The recently weak Paschke only came in 33rd place.
