Day 2 (US Open 2022)

19:21

Flight to watch

By the way, McIlroy plays together with Hideki Matsuyama and Xander Schauffele – a flight that we will certainly keep an eye on.

19:14

Rory tees up

The Northern Ireland superstar will tee off in minutes and start his second day. Yesterday he played very consistently, recorded a 67 and lived up to his status as one of the favourites. Let’s see how he can cope with today’s flag positions.

19:10

Tarren goes in front

Brit Callum Tarren was a positive surprise yesterday. After his 67, he opens solidly and snags on the 3 birdie number one. 4 under means sole leadership.

19:02

67 club

In addition to world number one Scottie Scheffler, who is currently tied for first place, Sam Burns and recently Brooks Koepka were able to record a 67. Burns and Koepka are 2 under and even par respectively and will definitely be back tomorrow.

18:48

Paul through, Schneider not yet at the warm-up

A little look at the German representatives: Yannik Paul was able to increase to 73 today after yesterday’s 77, but will remain behind the cut, as is most likely Marcel Schneider. He doesn’t get on the course until after 8 p.m., but with a round of 78 he has a huge mortgage.

18:45

Scheffler in the clubhouse

With the second round of 67 of the day, Scottie Scheffler arrives at the clubhouse in a shared lead. The Texan often has problems on the first few days – all the more reason why he has to be one of the favorites for the title!

18:31

Hovland in free fall

Shortly before the clubhouse, the issue of the US Open was sorted out for Norwegian Viktor Hovland. After six (!) bogeys in a row, he still needs additional shots on the 6 and 8. He has spectacularly devalued his solid 70 from yesterday. He can pack his bags today.

18:19

Hardy in the clubhouse

Nick Hardy makes an impressive 69-68 start to the tournament. That sounds solid – until you consider that only 1.3% of all players at the US Open since 2010 have started with 2 rounds of sub-70. Really strong start!

18:09

slowed down

After the impressive intermediate sprint, Brooks Koepka has to accept a setback on the 15th. He hits his approach shot in the second cut to the right of the green and then misses a short putt from about two feet. An unnecessary bogey!

18:05

Sheffler with an exclamation point

Great putt by Scottie Sheffler! On the 16 he putts in cleanly from around 3.5 meters and notates a birdie. He was able to make up 4 strokes on the last 4 holes and is now also on the shared 1st place.

18:04

Cameron Smith probably behind cut

Reigning Player’s Champions Cam Smith is one of the more prominent victims of the 2-day cut. Yesterday he played a round of 72, today he couldn’t catch a single birdie and is 5 over with 3 holes to go.

18:00

Damage control at Daffue

With a lob, Daffue lifts his ball to the edge of the green – and that was at best damage limitation. On the 18 he ruins the lap with a botched approach, he can hardly swing back on the rescue. It smells like double bogey now.

17:45

Hardy pushes forward

Nick Hardy has just joined the T1 group. Birdie on the 8, his penultimate hole, puts him 3 under just before handing in the scorecard.

17:44

Aggressive Koepka

Brooks records an eagle on the 14 and after birdie-birdie on 11 and 12 finally switches to attack mode. After yesterday’s 73 he has now improved to 1 under.

17:35

What to expect

In the next few hours, some of the industry’s top stars will be teeing off. Rory McIlroy (-3), Joel Dahmen (-3), Collin Morikawa, Will Zalatoris or Jon Rahm (-1 each) are promising after the first day and can follow in the next few hours.

17:29

Fitzpatrick downhill

Matt Fitzpatrick is actually not bad on the green in terms of distance, taps the ball only gently, but then it rolls downhill with a lot of slope and past the hole. The greens at Brookline are not for the faint of heart!

17:27

Michaelson disappointed

Oldie Phil Mickelson is back after a, shall we say, controversial year to date. His first day at his potentially last US Open was really disappointing with 78. Even today it is 3 over par after 12 holes.

17:25

Paul just before the clubhouse

The German Yannik Paul is also part of the game and is currently making his way to hole 17. After his 77 yesterday, he was even 1 under after 11 holes today, but conceded a double bogey on the 13th and another bogey on the 16th. The tournament will soon be over for him.

17:16

Bogey Bogey Daffue

On the treacherous green of the 15, Dafue loses his feathers again. Drive and approach are played cleanly, but he needs the additional putt and, after going 3 under in the meantime, is now even par again.

17:14

Hadwin falls behind

After Day 1, Canada’s Adam Hadwin was leading with 4 under par. He started with hole 10 and must also feel that the second half of the course is absolutely tough: bogey-bogey on 11 and 12 and another bogey on the 16 – with 1 under he is only on the shared 11th. Place.

17:09

The leader plays

With MJ Daffue from South Africa we currently have a sole leader who is currently 4 under thru 14. After his 67 yesterday, he was able to show himself on the front nine with 4 birdies and a bogey. But the bottom nine causes problems: On 11 and 14 he needs additional shots and is back at 1 under for the day.

17:08

Welcome back

Day 2 of the US Open has begun. We warmly welcome you again to the Ticker!
