Forgoes “a lot of money”
According to reports at the time, FC Schalke 04 wanted to sign Alexander Schwolow as early as 2020 – at that time still from SC Freiburg. There was no financial agreement two years ago, but now there is. The Royal Blues are loaning the 30-year-old, who is likely to be the new number one, for a year from Hertha BSC. On the access side, Schwolow is already the tenth person to report from the second division champions.
Two years ago, Hertha paid 7 million euros for Schwolow, who is still tied to the capital club until 2025. Since then, the Wiesbaden native has made 54 competitive appearances, in which he kept his box clean 14 times. In his first Hertha season, the former youth national player had temporarily lost his regular place, but then regained it – this season he missed the final sprint due to a muscle injury. The goalkeeper’s chapter with the “old lady” cannot be described as crowned with success: since the transfer, his market value has fallen from 8 million to 3 million euros.
Presents from Bremen, Schalke at the top: Most valuable players in the 2nd Bundesliga
“In Alexander we have gained an experienced keeper who will give our team stability. He has proven the quality he has in all of his previous positions,” said Schalke’s sporting director Rouven Schröder. “We are convinced that he will strengthen our goalkeeping team and help to achieve our goal in the coming season.” During the negotiations, he was impressed that Schwolow “waived a lot of money for his move to Schalke”. “During the interviews, he credibly conveyed to us that for him the sporting perspective has absolute priority.”
Goalkeeper Schwolow follows Fraisl at Schalke
Martin Fraisl (29) and club icon Ralf Fährmann (33) fought a duel in the Schalke goal this season. The Austrian, who is leaving the club again after a year, won the regular place on the eighth matchday from the long-time “squire”, who in turn is tied until 2025.
Another newcomer is fixed: Alexander #Schwolow joins on loan from until the end of the 2022/2023 season @Hertha BSC to the #S04
