Ralf Rangnick suffered his second defeat in his fourth game as Austria’s national coach. The Austrians lost 0:2 (0:2) against strong Danes on Monday evening. Wolfsburg striker Jonas Wind (21st minute) and Andreas Skov Olsen (37th) scored the goals in Copenhagen. After the third win, Denmark continues to lead the Nations League Group 1.
The Danes dominated the game from the start, the ÖFB selection hardly had any chances. After a nice combination, Wind initially took the lead from a short distance. Then Skov Olsen followed up after a quick counterattack. Shortly before the end, substitute Christian Eriksen (88th) almost made it 3-0. But his shot hit the post.
Despite the defeat, Rangnick was optimistic overall after his first international matches as national coach: “For me, the positive aspects clearly outweigh the negative ones. In the first three games we caused our opponents real problems,” said the 63-year-old. This was not the case on Monday. “We saw that we only have a chance against such opponents if things work down to the last detail. That wasn’t the case today. We didn’t play well enough today, so you have to accept this defeat.”
Second in the group is vice-world champions Croatia, who won 1-0 (1-0) in France in revenge for the 2018 World Cup final. Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric scored the decisive goal in Paris in the fifth minute with a penalty kick. Previously, ex-Leipzig and current Liverpool player Ibrahima Konaté stepped on the heel of a Croatian in the penalty area. World champion France remains without a win and is bottom of the table.
