Little support in Chamber for fireworks ban | Inland

Various political groups, including the VVD, CDA and SP, point out that the rules for fireworks have already become stricter. In 2020, heavier fireworks, of the so-called F3 category, were already banned. Shooting flares is no longer allowed, pots and fountains are still legal.

The parties first want to know what the effects are of the ban on heavier fireworks. According to them, the past two years do not give a good picture of this, because temporary bans were in effect due to corona. With this, the cabinet wanted to relieve the care, which was under heavy pressure due to corona. The critical MPs also think that in the event of a ban, people will resort more to illegal, often heavier fireworks.

GroenLinks and the PVDD want a ban because hundreds of people are injured by fireworks every year. They also point out the environmental pollution caused by fireworks and the nuisance that animals experience as a result.

Coalition party D66 still speaks of “a dilemma.” MP Kiki Hagen of the party calls a total ban “clearer”, but a partial ban “more precise.” The party wants to know to what extent a total ban can be enforced.

The petitioners do receive support from coalition party ChristenUnie. The SGP is also in favour. The Christian parties do want an exception to be made, for example for village or neighborhood associations.

The debate will continue at a later date. Then submitters Jesse Klaver (GroenLinks) and Esther Ouwehand (PVDD) respond to the comments from the House.
