There is no end in sight to the sports sanctions that Russia has received. The latest loss of prestige for the sports-loving president To Vladimir Putin is the loss of next year’s European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships.
The Games were to be held in Moscow. This year’s European Championships will be held in June in Tel Aviv, Israel.
Russia is an absolute power in rhythmic gymnastics, as it has sovereignly controlled the sport at the Summer Olympics and the World Championships.
In the Olympics, Russia has won a total of ten gold medals in the sport, and no other country has won more than one gold. Russia is also by far the leading country in the medal table of the European Championships.
The International Gymnastics Federation has ruled out Russia and its ally Belarus from its international events.
Russia is very much excluded from national team sports as a result of the war in Ukraine. Many other rights to organize value competitions have also been exported.
