After almost half an hour of play at a score of 0-0, the match was stopped for a while after supporters threw objects including lighters at the linesman. Just before that, Thijs Dallinga had missed a penalty on behalf of Excelsior. The rebound was also not for him.
Then referee Danny Makkelie heard that one of his linesmen had been pelted. He directed both teams to the locker room for a break. After Excelsior’s 3-3 (after trailing 3-0!) in injury time, the game came to a halt again, as ADO fans came onto the field. Injury time should bring a solution. There may even be penalties.
The return in the final of the play-offs started at 6 p.m. in The Hague. The first game between ADO and Excelsior ended in 1-1 in Rotterdam on Tuesday. ADO hopes to return to the Eredivisie after one year of absence. Excelsior last played at the highest level in the 2018/19 season.
ADO goalkeeper Hugo Wentges saved a penalty.
