Werder Bremen takes ex-Hertha player Niklas Stark after 7 years in Berlin

After 7 years in Berlin

Werder Bremen made the signing of Niklas Stark (27) perfect and officially announced it on Saturday. Reports of a sighting of the long-time Hertha central defender were followed by a quick report from the Weser. The green-whites did not announce the contract period, the “kicker” assumes a duration until 2026.

“Niklas has been in our field of vision for a long time. Now there’s an opportunity to convince him of Werder and bring him to the Weser,” explained Clemens Fritz, Head of Professional Football & Scouting at SVW. “With his 200 Bundesliga games, he already has plenty of experience that he will bring to us.”

Strong as a Toprak replacement at Werder? Next free transfer defender after Pieper

Coach Ole Werner, under whom Bremen just managed to get promoted to the Bundesliga, said: “Niklas is a robust and technically good defensive player who has already experienced a lot in his career. He can certainly help us immediately. It’s great that we were able to convince him of the sporting prospects at Werder.”

Stark has been with BSC since 2015, which he joined from training club 1. FC Nürnberg. Since then he has played almost 200 competitive games for the “Old Lady”, who once paid a fee of 3 million euros. There were only two players in the Hertha squad last season who played more games for the club than Stark.

Werder had previously signed a free defender in Amos Pieper (24) from Arminia Bielefeld. The next signing for the center of defense could now also have an impact on the future of captain Ömer Toprak (32), who also only has a contract until 30 June. So far, there has been no clear, public sign of how the often injured German-Turk should continue after promotion. Milos Veljkovic’s (26) contract is also expiring.
