The Rockpalast is digging into its archive again — and is showing a great concert from 1978. That September, Peter Gabriel gave a guest performance in the Grugahalle in Essen.
From On The Air to The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
Among other things, the Genesis song “The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway”, the solo classic “Solsbury Hill” and ambitious pieces like “White Shadow” and “Humdrum” were on the program. As an opener, Gabriel presented a new song – “On The Air”. At that time, Gabriel had not been active as a solo artist for long. In 1975 he left the prog institution Genesis and released his first solo album in 1977. “Peter Gabriel” — that’s the name of the debut — not only shone with great songs, but also fantastic musicians. Alongside Gabriel, it featured guitar icon Robert Fripp, bass master Tony Levin and drummer Allen Schwarzberg. He even brought the London Symphony Orchestra into the studio for two songs. A year later, Gabriel made a guest appearance at the Rockpalast – and delighted the German audience.

Unfortunately, Fripp is not present at the live concert, Sid McGuiness took over the guitar at the time. If you want to see the concert on TV, you have to either stay up a little longer or get up very early: WDR shows the concert from 2:10 a.m. You can already see it online — in the ADR media library.
