Review: Soak :: If I Never Know You Like This Again

You turn on MTV, it’s “120 Minutes” with Paul King or “Alternative Nation” with Marijne van der Vlugt, and you know that in the next few minutes you’re bound to see a video clip of a band you’ll love in the future. Ash or Radiohead, Belly or Sleeper, Pavement or the Throwing Muses – where else would you have heard these groups for the first time than on music television in the ’90s? Bridie Monds-Watson from Northern Ireland was born in 1996, so she only knows this time from hearsay. However, on the third album by the project Soak, she plays music that would certainly have been on one of those shows.

After two records that saw Soak add “anger meets heart” to the singer/songwriter genre, Monds-Watson has added some nuances to the project with IF I NEVER KNOW YOU LIKE THIS AGAIN. There’s more noise, more indie-rock nonchalance, more Radiohead melancholy, including those minor-key anthems that twist upside down in the heart and that’s why they stick so tight. The great lyrics, on the other hand, are more modern – and above all more explicit than on the first Soak albums: Songs like “Pretzel” tell in detail about queer relationships and physical devotion.
