Thousands of mice were found on Tuesday in a dirty house in Oudenbosch. The resident once brought a few mice into the house, but it got completely out of hand. And that wasn’t the first time neglected animals were found in someone’s home. These (domestic) animals were also neglected in Brabant houses.
More than 20 rabbits, 27 parakeets and 12 pigeons were removed on September 7, 2021 by the National Animal Protection Inspectorate (LID). They lived in an extremely polluted building in the municipality of Sint-Michielsgestel. Here the rabbits sat on excrement of centimeters in size and there were cobwebs on the cages. The animals themselves looked healthy.
Nineteen sick and neglected cats were found on September 10, 2020 in a dirty holiday home in Woensdrecht. The cats had fleas, scratch marks and a dirty coat. The eyes and nose were also very dirty in most cats. The holiday home had a heavy ammonia smell, it was packed with stuff and it was seriously polluted.
Two of the nineteen cats were even worse off than the other cats. One of those two cats didn’t make it due to dehydration and had to be put to sleep. The other cats were taken to an animal shelter.
More than a hundred birds were found last Monday at a bird trader in Brabant. Many were in bad shape. The trader kept the birds in a shed that, according to the LID, was ‘just filthy’. The living conditions were therefore bad for these kept birds. The animals were placed with storekeepers and an official report has been requested against the trader.
Also in Breda, birds of prey were kept in cages that were too small and polluted. The birds were seized by the National Animal Protection Inspectorate on September 25, 2018 from a 52-year-old man. He kept owls, falcons, buzzards and a raven inside. When the owner of the animals tried to prevent the seizure, he was arrested.
On May 25, 2021, the animal police removed thirteen neglected cats from a filthy house in Tilburg. They looked bad and had to live in bad conditions. Twelve other cats also lived in the house, but they were not taken because they did not need immediate help. However, the owner would be additionally checked. The cats have been moved to another place.

On September 26, 2019, dozens of neglected puppies were found living in pens among their own feces. Some puppies even had worms, for which they were immediately treated. Also, the puppies should never be separated from their mother. The young animals were taken away by the National Animal Protection Inspectorate and were eventually placed at another shelter.
It does not always have to be a large number of animals. In Zundert, a neglected dog was found by the LID on July 30, 2021. The beast looked bad and had a lot of inflammation. The owner of the dog had to give his pet to animal protection. After this, the dog was taken to a shelter where a search was made for a new owner for him.
