According to media reports, the sale of Chelsea is approaching. Russian owner Roman Abramovich and the British government are said to have agreed on the terms, several British media reported on Wednesday. Further details were not initially known. The sale must be completed by May 31, when the government’s provisional dispensation for the London club ends.

But the sanctions imposed on Abramovich and Chelsea by the British government for his close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin are preventing that, as Abramovich’s assets are currently frozen. The British government is also demanding guarantees that the proceeds from the sale of the club will go to a charitable foundation, as announced by Abramovich.
The new Chelsea owner is expected to be American Todd Boehly, co-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team. He had prevailed with his consortium against several competitors and should pay 4.25 billion pounds (approx. 5 billion euros) for the blues. According to reports, Boehly has already met with Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel. The final step is for the Premier League to approve the sale to the new owners.
