Mannheim (dpa) – League managing director Frank Bohmann does not believe that the handball clubs in the Bundesliga will take on the status of training clubs in the future because of the departure of numerous stars.
“We’re still a long way from that,” Bohmann told “Mannheimer Morgen”. “The largest collection of top stars is still in Germany. Accordingly, we have and will remain the strongest league in the world.”
Among other things, THW Kiel’s playmaker Sander Sagosen and Magnus Rød and Gøran Søgard Johannessen from SG Flensburg-Handewitt will leave the league in summer 2023 and join the Norwegian club Kolstad IL. Magnus Gullerud from SC Magdeburg and other top performers from the Bundesliga will be moving there after this season.
Bohmann also sees an opportunity for young Germans in the financially strong clubs from other European countries. “What we need here in part is a change in awareness, the consequence of which is to promote and develop our own talents even better,” said Bohmann. “We still have some catching up to do in German handball. Norway, Denmark and Sweden have been doing extremely well for years. In these countries, one top talent after another is being trained, which of course increases the likelihood that more world-class players will mature as a result. Not at all ‘Cause there’s a magic potion there.”
