Euro TourMichael van Gerwen has won the European Darts Open in Leverkusen. In the exciting final, the Brabant player was too strong for Dimitri Van den Bergh with 8-5. Last week, Van Gerwen also won the Austrian Darts Open.
Despite an average of over 105 and highlights such as a 164 finish, Van Gerwen was able to finish the first eight legs of the final. Dancing Dimic don’t shake off. It was 4-4 at the halfway point. Seven missed match darts
Van Gerwen reached the final after a thrilling duel with Dirk van Duijvenbode (6-5) in the quarter-finals, and a great victory over Luke Humphries (7-2) in the semi-finals. Against Humphries it was a win by the book. Both darters were unable to break each other in the first four legs. Then it was Van Gerwen who set the first break with a neat 13-darters and cashed in: 4-2.
Immediately afterwards, the resident of Vlijmen took it up a notch by breaking his English opponent again, but this time with an 11-darter. Humphries didn’t come close anymore and saw Van Gerwen set an average of 105.3.
Dimitri Van den Bergh had not played a semifinal. The Belgian received a ‘bye’ because opponent James Wade had to cancel due to ‘illness’. The Englishman was already feeling unwell during the quarterfinals against Ryan Searle, and was advised by the medical team to forgo the rest of the tournament.
Quarter final
In the quarterfinals none other than compatriot Dirk van Duijvenbode was the opponent, who started the match strong by breaking Van Gerwen in the first leg with a 120 finish. Then missed Mighty Mike chances to break back, and also failed to keep his second leg of his own: 3-0. Still, the Vlijmenaar managed to get a little closer with one break, but in the end was faced with a 5-3 deficit.

It was only in the eighth leg that the Dutchman was the first to cash in on a break by throwing out 130. He did not relinquish that lead by also taking the ninth and final leg: 6-3.
