The footballers of VfL Wolfsburg are only missing one win to win the German championship. The Bundesliga leaders won 5-1 (3-1) at SGS Essen and are four points ahead of the defending champions FC Bayern Munich two games before the end of the season.
The championship could be decided as early as May 6 if Bayern should lose their game in Leverkusen. Otherwise, the Wolfsburg women have the chance to complete their seventh title win since 2013 two days later with a win at bottom Carl Zeiss Jena.
In Essen, Dominique Janssen gave VfL the lead in the 17th minute with a penalty kick. Ewa Pajor (28′) and Tabea Waßmuth (33′) made it 3-0 before Vivien Endemann brought the hosts back on in the 36th minute. In front of 942 spectators, Janssen (67th) and Sandra Starke (90th + 3) scored again after the break.
