SBS 6 is struggling with a historically sharp drop in viewing figures now that Today Inside has abruptly disappeared from the tube. The channel completely collapsed at half past nine in the evening: hardly anyone is watching anymore.
Where Today Inside managed to captivate about 800,000 viewers every day, and last week even more than 1.3 million with the last broadcast, the successor scores dramatically. The repeat series Chateau Meiland: from France to Noordwijk did not exceed 220 thousand viewers and 4.6 percent market share at the same time yesterday. Horribly bad.
SBS 6 collapses
SBS 6 is back to square one with this kind of viewing figures. In fact, the collapse of the channel comes at a dramatic moment now that John de Mol hopes to merge with RTL this year. Although TV dinosaur Fons van Westerloo wonders whether RTL should still want that at all. “Now things have gotten out of hand.”
The AD surprised last night with the news that work is being done on a return of Today Inside, but Johan Derksen told the ANP shortly afterwards that he knew nothing and that he no longer needed it. After all, both John de Mol and the Talpa management dropped him relentlessly after the candle riot.
What does Talpa say?
What does Talpa say about the rumors about a VI comeback? Albert Verlinde in Shownieuws: “We called SBS and Talpa. They say: ‘We get stupid calls all day long.’ Paul Romer, for example. He says, ‘We’re really not going to say anything about it.’ Of course they are looking at whether they can do something about such a restart.”
According to Albert, nothing is known about this yet, so according to him the story in the AD is not correct. “If there’s any news, they actually let you know immediately, but it looks like it’s a little monkey story.”
Dead sparrow
Evert Sankrediets does not see a VI return happening either. He thinks the AD is misinformed. “It was good news. You can see that in the response under that piece on the site of the AD. Everyone is very happy that it comes back, but they are happy with a dead sparrow. It’s really over for Johan. “I’m not going to do it,” he says.”
Maybe VI will come back with a new line-up, says Albert. “I do think they will really look, because of course they have a team that can make such a program, there are a lot of men who have an opinion at such a table, because you miss it.”
Much more boring
Without VI, the TV is very boring, Albert agrees. “Bert van der Veer also said tonight that TV has become a lot more boring, because you only have politically correct talk shows: Op1 and Beau or Jinek. A bit of that bustle between half past nine and half past ten…”
Colleague William Rutten: “Yes, I am really sorry that the program is no longer available. I thought it was a very nice change.”
Albert: “So who knows, it might come back.”
A return of Today Inside with a completely new line-up will of course not please the viewer. The presenters who sit in it will be seen as job pickers, and as puppets of Talpa.
bad evening
In any case, SBS 6 had a pretty bad evening with HLF8 (322 thousand), 10 for Taal (446 thousand), Hart van Nederland (478 thousand) and Shownieuws (369 thousand).
