Explosive weekend in Berlin – Russian commemoration and protests against war

After May 1st with its many demonstrations, another weekend of rallies and conflicts on a hot topic is coming up in Berlin.

Numerous demonstrations and rallies to mark the end of World War II in 1945 and to commemorate the dead of the Soviet Army have been registered for Sunday and Monday (May 8/9).

Russian initiatives are behind many of these annual events. In previous years, the Russian embassy also organized wreath-laying events – it was initially not known whether this was also planned for this year. At the same time, anti-Russian counter-rallies are also planned this year because of the attack on Ukraine.

The police are therefore planning to keep the demonstrations at a distance. Interior Secretary Torsten Akmann (SPD) also announced “tough conditions” for pro-Russian events. The number of flags should be limited so that there can be no glorification of aggressive war.

Hate and violence at demo in Berlin, but “most peaceful May Day in decades”

The administrative court recently declared restrictions on pro-Russian demonstrations permissible. A sea of Russian flags could be perceived as support for the Russian war, a larger number of flags could have a “martial” and “intimidating” effect. The judges decided that this could endanger internal peace in the current situation.

At the beginning of April, a pro-Russian motorcade in Berlin sparked outrage. Around 400 vehicles drove through the city with Russian flags. On the same day, the killing of civilians in the Ukrainian city of Bucha came to light.
