And that turns out to be a very wise man, from whom we can all learn a lot.
Floortje to the end of the world
Every episode Floortje travels to a remote destination where she visits people who lead a special life. She walks along for a few days to see how they stand in life. She experiences what it is like to live in such an unusual place.
This time Floortje visits the Dutch Manon in the pristine wilderness of Kenya. During one of her many trips through Kenya, she met Sankale, a chieftain of the Masai. The two fell in love and Manon has been living with him for years now in the close-knit Masai community of Sankale. She had no trouble leaving her western life behind. She feels completely at home in the primitive and peaceful existence of Kenyan nature.
Stress is an illness you bring on yourself
“When I look at how people live in the Netherlands, I think they are very much in a hurry. Everything has to be quick quick quick. They don’t just do one thing at a time,” says Sankale when Floortje asks what he thinks of Western life. When he was in the Netherlands and spoke to people, everyone said: “I’m so stressed.” He didn’t understand what she meant. “I thought stress was a nasty disease, comparable to malaria or other diseases. But this is a disease you bring on yourself. By doing everything at once, straining your head and competing.”
“You always want more and that stresses you out. We say here: more is more is less and less. Happiness lies in ‘less’.” A wise lesson. But it doesn’t stop there. Sankale also has advice for all westerners: “I wish everyone in the Netherlands could learn: more is less. Do one thing at a time.”
Comments from viewers
Viewers admire the beautiful nature in Kenya and are also very pleased with the wise words of Sankale, a chieftain of the Masai. “Kenya, a world of difference. stress? What is stress? You in Europe want more and more. Stress is a self-inflicted illness. more is less”, writes a viewer on Twitter. Another responds with: “Special man who is Sankale. You can learn a lot from it. Something for College tour?”
