The governing coalition and the Berlin FDP want to lower the voting age in parliamentary elections to 16. A comment from BZ editor Johannes Malinowski.
At what point does a person become an adult and should they take on social responsibility?
Beer and wine are available from the age of 16, and at 18 young people are allowed to drive alone. According to criminal law, I’m an adult at 21, but to be elected President, I have to be at least 40 years old.

Some 14-year-olds come across as particularly sensible, while other 50-year-olds are quite childish. Lowering the voting age for the Berlin House of Representatives to 16 is only logical. Forming political opinions doesn’t just begin when you turn 18.
And by the way, it’s also a nice sign that the coalition and the FDP are in agreement on something.
