After the Champions League exit: FC Bayern wins comfortably at Arminia Bielefeld

Kunze carried off the pitch

FC Bayern Munich has paved the way for the title decision in the top game against Borussia Dortmund. Five days after the bitter Champions League defeat against FC Villarreal, the German record champions deservedly won 3-0 (2-0) at second-bottom Arminia Bielefeld on Easter Sunday. Munich can complete the tenth championship in a row early on Saturday with a win against BVB.

Midfielder Fabian Kunze injured his head at Bielefeld and had to be carried off the pitch. An own goal by Arminias Jacob Laursen gave Bayern the lead in the 10th minute. Serge Gnabry (45+7) and Jamal Musiala (85) scored the other goals for Munich. In front of 26,419 spectators on the Bielefelder Alm, the hosts fought back, but could not keep up in terms of play. With four games left, Arminia is two points behind the relegation place and three points behind in 15th place.

Bavaria’s sports director Hasan Salihamidzic said before the game on the streaming service “DAZN” that he expected a “defiant reaction”. He should have liked what the 45-year-old saw a little later. Munich played superior from the start. Robert Lewandowski’s first big chance was spectacularly diverted to the crossbar and post by Bielefeld’s strong goalkeeper Stefan Ortega. At 0:1 he was powerless. Defender Laursen involuntarily put the ball over his own goal line. Bayern kept looking for Thomas Müller, the advancing Marcel Sabitzer or Lewandowski in the center of the attack.

There had recently been speculation about the future of the world footballer and a possible transfer to FC Barcelona. However, CEO Oliver Kahn had ruled out an early change for Lewandowski in the summer. “We want him to stay at Bayern Munich for as long as possible,” said Kahn on Sunday in the “double pass” from “Sport1”. Lewandowski’s contract with Bayern expires in the summer of 2023. Then the contracts of Manuel Neuer (36), Gnabry (26) and Müller (32) will end.

In front of the eyes of Bielefeld’s record goalscorer Fabian Klos, who was a fan in the stadium after his severe head injury, the East Westphalians only occasionally posed a threat on the counterattack – but then didn’t aim too precisely. Leon Goretzka and Sabitzer had more good chances for the second goal in Munich. During the first half, the Bayern fans in the crowded guest block were already singing about the championship.

Carried off the field: “Cautious all-clear” at Bielefeld’s Kunze

Things got turbulent just before the break: first Masaya Okugawa’s supposed equalizer didn’t count because of an offside position, then Kunze had to be treated for a long time and finally Gnabry made it 0:2 in the seventh minute of added time. During the half-time break, the stadium announcer gave the “cautious all-clear” regarding Kunze. As Arminia announced, the 23-year-old is doing better again. He is stable, but will be taken to the hospital for tests to be on the safe side. Arminen Klos and Cédric Brunner had already suffered head injuries in the past few weeks.

Bayern now went into management mode. Not much happened up front, Bielefeld occasionally scored shots at the back. But it rarely got really dangerous. In this way, Bayern brought the success safely over time – especially since Musiala was still successful after being substituted on (61st). Munich can now look forward to the duel between first and second with BVB.
