Trump Faces Critical Crisis Day Amid Iran and Ukraine Tensions

The Ukraine war has long been overshadowed by the war in Iran in the United States—today both are on Trump’s agenda. This is particularly relevant during meetings with his counterparts from Israel and Ukraine.

The recently deceased US Senator Lindsey Graham was one of the most crucial supporters of Israel and Ukraine in Washington. A memorial service is taking place in the US capital, where, according to various Ukrainian and American media reports, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are expected to meet. For both leaders, this visit is an opportune moment to meet with US President Donald Trump.

First Meeting Since the Start of the Iran War

Trump last hosted Netanyahu at the White House in February, with discussions focused on Iran. About two and a half weeks later, the US and Israel launched joint attacks against the Islamic Republic. Five months have passed since, and US-Israeli interests in the war have become increasingly evident. While Israel seemed eager to continue the military campaign, Trump had focused on seeking a diplomatic resolution.

With the latest escalation in the conflict, both the agreed ceasefire and the framework agreement between Washington and Tehran are now history. This poses a problem for Trump, as significant congressional midterm elections are approaching in about 100 days. The war is unpopular domestically, and some in the US hold Netanyahu responsible for persuading Trump to take military action.

The Relationship Between the Two

In recent months, the historically strong relationship between Trump and Netanyahu has encountered strain due to differences regarding the Iran war. With an upcoming pivotal election in Israel this October, it’s crucial for Netanyahu to present a united front with Trump.

Netanyahu emphasized before the gathering that this would be his eighth meeting with Trump during the latter’s second term, “more than with any other international head of state or government.” He referred to this as “a great privilege, but also a significant responsibility.” Trump commented on Monday that while he and Netanyahu have a “slight disagreement” regarding Iran, they are fairly aligned.

What Netanyahu Seeks from Trump

Netanyahu made it clear at the start of his US trip that the primary agenda in his meeting with Trump would be Iran. Israeli TV reported that Netanyahu aims to provide Trump with intelligence regarding Iran’s alleged efforts to rebuild its military capabilities, including claims that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, is pursuing a nuclear weapon. Tehran has fiercely denied such allegations for years.

“Convincing Trump to abandon a stalled diplomatic process in favor of a new large-scale military operation will likely prove challenging,” noted the “Times of Israel,” particularly as Netanyahu might request Trump’s approval for renewed Israeli attacks on Iran.

Numerous Meetings in Recent Weeks

Trump and Zelensky have met more frequently in recent weeks: first at the NATO summit in Ankara and then at the G7 summit in Évian, France. At both summits, the US also presented unified positions on the Ukraine war.

During his campaign, Trump often claimed he could end the Russian war in 24 hours. However, he has yet to achieve significant breakthroughs in his mediation efforts. In recent months, he has notably focused more on the conflict in Iran.

The Relationship Between Zelensky and Trump

When Zelensky arrives in Washington, memories of the Oval Office incident resurface. Shortly after taking office, Trump loudly accused his Ukrainian counterpart on camera, cutting the meeting short.

Thereafter, the relationship between the two heads of state visibly improved, even if Trump continues to face criticism for not distancing himself enough from Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to Zelensky, a turning point was a brief conversation in Vatican City in April 2025. “That was a historic moment where we changed our relationship in 15, 20 minutes,” Zelensky recently told US influencer Laura Loomer in an interview in Kyiv. He expressed gratitude for the dialogue with Trump, which he noted affects many lives.

What Zelensky Seeks from Trump

Shortly before Graham’s death, Zelensky talked in Kyiv with the Trump ally, who declared his support for new sanctions against Russia from the White House. This initiative targets countries importing Russian energy resources, thereby funding the war against Ukraine. The package has long been stuck in the Senate. Following Graham’s passing, several senators are trying to advance their deceased colleague’s key objective. Kyiv sees this as a way to increase pressure on Russia.

In addition to sanctions, Zelensky is particularly keen on new deliveries of Patriot air defense missiles ahead of the forthcoming winter. While Kyiv is set to receive a production license for these missiles, establishing a production facility in Ukraine will take months, and the production numbers are unlikely to meet the Ukrainian demand amidst the increasing Russian missile strikes.

In mid-July, the Ukrainian leader stated that a minimum of 300 such missiles would be required for the three winter months. However, reports suggest that Washington is currently also struggling with dwindling air defense ammunition reserves in its own conflict against Iran. (dpa/edited by skr)
