Lewis Hamilton is on the rise in Formula 1 with Ferrari. F1 expert David Coulthard sees the seven-time champion in the World Cup race and also points to Mercedes concerns.
Hamilton can still win in Formula 1. The 41-year-old celebrated his first Grand Prix victory in 686 days in Barcelona, his first with Ferrari.
“It really felt like we had already seen the best of Lewis, but what we have just experienced is the best of Lewis – thanks to his strong start to the season,” commented former racing driver David Coulthard on “F1.com” about the Brit’s renaissance in Formula 1.
Is Hamilton now a World Championship candidate in Formula 1?
Hamilton is second in the drivers’ championship. The gap to Mercedes youngster Kimi Antonelli is 41 points. Can the Ferrari star still win his eighth world title and thus become the sole record world champion in Formula 1?
“He’s second in the world championship, Mercedes have reliability concerns and that’s only going to get worse as the year goes on – so could we be looking at someone challenging for the world title?” asked Coulthard.
The 55-year-old recalled the previous season in Formula 1: “Max [Verstappen] made up a 100 point deficit in this race and almost did in Abu Dhabi [die WM] won.”
Mercedes failures in Formula 1
There are still 15 weekends on the program in Formula 1, next up is Austria (June 26th to 28th).
Mercedes recently had to cope with technical failures. George Russell had to park his car in Montreal. In Barcelona, leader Antonelli was hit.
Hamilton won six of his seven world championship titles in Formula 1 with the Silver Arrows – most recently in 2020.
