In Italy in May 2026 they were sold 151 used cars for every 100 newly registered carsa ratio that rises to 173 used cars for every 100 new ones considering the first five months of 2026: these are numbers that confirm the importance and weight of the used market in the national automotive sector. This is what emerges from the latest Auto-Trend bulletin published by the Automobile Club of Italy, which also highlights how car ownership changes stood at 259,925 units, down by -2.6% compared to the 266,741 recorded in the same month last year. The two-wheeler market recorded a slight decline, but substantially stable numbers, with 72,234 changes of ownership compared to 72,330 the previous year (-0.1%). However, the radiation from the fleet in circulation is significantly increasing. In May, car cancellations from the Public Automobile Registry increased by +10.9%with 107,051 cases compared to 96,506 in the same month of 2025. This surge in numbers is mainly determined by the increase in demolitions, equal to +15.6%while exports grew more modestly (+2.1%). Finally, the replacement rate stood at 0.62: that is to say that for every 100 new cars registered, 62 were deregistered. Motorcycle deregistrations fell by 1.3%, with 10,558 practices registered compared to 10,701 in May 2025. Taking all vehicles into consideration, there were 128,664 deregistrations compared to 117,274 for the same vehicle. month of the previous year, recording an increase of +9.7%. In the first five months of 2026, radiation confirms this positive trend: +5% for cars, +2.7% for motorcycles and +4.2% for all vehicles. As regards the class of deregistered cars, in the period January-May 2026 the Euro 4 clearly prevails, representing 36.4% of the total, followed by the Euro 5-6, equal to 32.9%. Euro 3 accounts for 18.7%, while the older classes, Euro 0, Euro 1 and Euro 2, account for 10.9% overall, numbers which overall are also confirmed in the past month, with Euro 4 at 35.9%, Euro 5-6 at 33.2%, Euro 3 at 18.5% and Euro 2 at 9%.

In the used market, traditional fuel systems, petrol and diesel, continue to be the favourite, but it is important to highlight the ever-increasing diffusion of electrified engines. In fact, petrol hybrid cars reached a share of 12.1% of ownership changes in May, with an increase of +29.9% compared to twelve months ago. The presence of used electric cars is increasing, but still far from its competitors: in May they represented 1.5% of the market, with growth of +42.3% compared to the same month of 2025. The report also confirms the progressive aging of the fleet in circulation: in Italy, in May, cars aged between 20 and 29 years represented 16.8% of changes of ownership compared to 15.1% in May 2025. The share of cars over thirty years old is also increasing, which instead account for 3% of the total, compared to the 2.8% recorded in the same month of the previous year. From a territorial point of view, ownership changes are decreasing in all macro-areas: North-West -0.7%, North-East -4.2%, Center -2.2% and South/Islands -3.2%. At a regional level, the only positive variations concern Piedmont (+1.1%) and Umbria (+1.3%). For radiation, on the contrary, growth is widespread: North-West +8.9%, North-East +2.5%, Center +11.5% and South/Islands +18.8%. The highest regional variations are recorded in Southern Italy, with Sicily (+30%), Calabria (+25.8%) and Sardinia (+23.9%). Only Valle d’Aosta and Emilia-Romagna decreased.
