Just under a month ago, a Karvina we cried with joy. The team from the small Moravian-Silesian city had just beaten theFK Jablonec 3-1, raising the National Cup to the sky. Unique and prestigious trophy in its history. A footballing fairy tale born in 2015/16, the year of the first historic promotion to the top flight, and culminating in an unexpected triumph. It’s a shame that, while the team was celebrating on the pitch, the perfect storm was already brewing above their heads.
Behind the scenes, the local police had been working blindly for three years on a dense network of sports fraud and clandestine betting. A mammoth investigation, the largest ever seen in Czech football, which led to the opening of 47 disciplinary proceedings and to theindictment of 32 people. The earthquake, however, does not stop at the playing field and also overwhelms local politics. The mayor of Karvina, Jan Wolfwas heavily sanctioned with a fine of 125,000 euros and, above all, with a twelve-year ban from the world of football. The accusation for him is heavy: having interfered directly with the actions of the referees. They also ended up in the sights of sports justice five players from the squadsuspended and fined for amounts approaching i 6,000 euros. The investigations have established that the most serious violations concern three decisive matches for the fight for salvation played in 2024. Practically, an entire rigged system.
Karvina, the Europe puzzle and the hopes of an appeal
What happens now? Paradoxically, Karvina should be able to keep the cup they just won on their board, given that the crimes reported refer to the championship two years ago. The real question mark concerns the European future. On the field, the team would earn the pass for the Europa League, but it is clear that now the last word belongs to UEFA. It is unlikely that in Nyon they will turn a blind eye to a football betting story of this magnitude.
The club has one last card left to play: the MFK Karvina management has already made it known will appeal to try to overturn a sentence which, at the moment, erases years of sporting miracles.
