Despite poor polls, MR chairman Georges-Louis Bouchez is optimistic about the future of his party. “We will win the elections in 2029,” he said on Sunday during the celebration of the 180th anniversary of the Belgian liberals.

Under Bouchez, the MR achieved a historic election victory in 2024. With almost 30 percent of the votes, it left the PS behind and formed a majority both in Wallonia and federally with Les Engagés.
Big Poll
However, in the latest polls, things are not looking so good for the French-speaking liberals. In the Major Poll by Het Laatste Nieuws, VTM, RTL and Le Soir, which was released on Friday, the MR barely obtained 20 percent of the votes and remained at a great distance from the Socialists.

Bouchez is still optimistic
Still, Bouchez is optimistic. “People will recognize those who have had the courage to take responsibility,” he said on Sunday in a speech on the occasion of the 180th anniversary of liberalism in Belgium, which is being celebrated in Brussels’ Palace of the Academies. “We will win the elections in 2029.”
How can the sharp dip at the MR actually be explained? Does part of the explanation lie with the foul-mouthed chairman? And where have their voters defected to? You can read it in this plus article.
