Most recently, Haiti had to change the World Cup jersey. Now the Egyptian team has also been hit. It was only small details that made FIFA take action.

The Egyptian national team’s jerseys must be changed before the first game against Belgium (Monday, 9 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online). The Egyptian Football Association (Efa) announced this itself.

Association spokesman Morad Thabet told ESPN broadcaster: “It was a routine procedure four months ago: FIFA made the football association aware that the stars of the Africa Cup of Nations could not be seen on the jersey during the World Cup.”

Background: The seven stars are actually emblazoned above the association logo. They represent the seven Africa Cups won (2010, 2008, 2006, 1998, 1986 and 1957). The problem: At the World Cup, gold stars can only be worn on the jersey for world championships won. And Egypt has not won a single World Cup so far.

The exception to the star rule is Uruguay

The only exception to this rule is Uruguay. The South American team is allowed to wear four stars on its jersey, having only won the 1930 and 1950 World Cups. However, “La Celeste” also won the two Olympic tournaments in 1924 and 1928, both of which were organized by FIFA.

However, the gold stars are not the only detail that needs to be changed. Association spokesman Thabet spoke about another thing: “Fifa has requested a change in the color of the jersey numbers from gold to white.” The background to this is said to be fears that the golden numbers will be difficult to recognize for spectators and referees.
