On days like these, Germany’s path to the 2026 World Cup in Mexico, Canada and the USA will hopefully be an easy one. To ensure that the major FIFA tournament at least goes beyond the preliminary round this time, “Major Tom” by Peter Schilling will also be played overseas when the DFB team scores goals.
FIFA allowed all teams to play their own songs for the moment after the goal was scored. No question, the fan choice of the song with the line “Completely detached – from the Eeeerde”, which is always sung together, has been a staple in their own country since the 2024 European Championship.
But FIFA also allows two more song titles, so to speak, as accompanying music at the World Cup. After German successes, “On Days Like These” by Die Toten Hosen is played.
“Signature Song” for the German national team
There was also the option of choosing a “signature song” that could be played at a time around the game. Here the DFB decided on “Time for something to happen” by Herbert Grönemeyer. This was the official song for the 2006 World Cup in Germany (“Celebrate The Day” in the English language version).
There will be a good omen and a party atmosphere when the German national team starts the tournament on Sunday (June 14th) at 7 p.m. CET. A rather relaxed start, which is then followed by tricky tasks against Ivory Coast (June 20th, 10 p.m.) and Ecuador (June 25th, 10 p.m.).
The best way to prove how important such goal music is is that “Kernkraft 400” by Zombie Nation was always played before “Major Tom”. Nobody remembers that today. However, this also applies to some of the DFB team’s desolate kicks following the failed World Cup in Qatar in 2022.
The official song for the 2026 World Cup in Mexico, Canada and the USA is called “Dai Dai” and will be sung by Shakira and Burna Boy. Both performed the song at the opening ceremony in Mexico City on Thursday (June 11). The track also briefly mentions “Germany”. And in the video, even Messi is allowed to say something (which is rare, at least in English).
