Fifa boss Gianni Infantino has rejected criticism of the high ticket prices for the World Cup that begins on Thursday. The prices are “reasonable,” he said.

Fifa President Gianni Infantino has backed the ticket prices for the World Cup. The discussions had just started again when it came to the prices for the World Cup final, some of which are over 28,000 euros.

At the same time, investigations against the global association are underway in three US states – due to possible violations of consumer protection law and misleading ticket allocation practices.

  • Mood of crisis before the start of the World Cup: Has he lost control?

In California, the attorney general sent a letter to FIFA. In it, he examines possible violations of California consumer protection law. The attorneys general of New Jersey and New York have launched an investigation into potentially deceptive ticketing practices. Infantino explained that he was following the investigation “very relaxed.”

Infantino said, “It’s not like someone wakes up and sets the prices.” He referred to ticket prices for other top sports in the USA. The starting price of 60 dollars for World Cup tickets is the lowest in comparison – as is the average price of 500 dollars. Infantino emphasized: “Before we sold 6.5 million tickets, we consulted with the best lawyers.”

The prices on the secondary market approved by FIFA had particularly heated up people’s tempers. Hospitality packages for up to 600,000 euros were offered for the final in New Jersey. In the meantime, final game tickets were even available for several million euros. Group games between outsiders such as Haiti and Scotland or Ghana and Panama were available from 330 and 440 euros respectively.

Infantino also fundamentally defended his association’s actions: “Every dollar we generate goes back into football.” Who is investing in South Sudan, he asked – and answered himself: “We are doing it.” This is possible thanks to FIFA’s income.
