The Premier League club Everton was handed a heavy penalty on Wednesday. The club was ordered to pay £35 million in compensation to Burnley, who were relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season. The amount translates to about 40.5 million euros in euros.
According to the British newspaper The Guardian, the penalty is the largest single financial penalty given to a Premier League club.
There is a legal proceeding in the background. Burnley sued the Liverpool club after it was relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2021-22 season. The club justified its legal challenge with the fact that, during the same season, Everton broke the Premier League’s own rules of financial fair play in the four seasons before Burnley’s then relegation.
For the following season, Everton was sentenced to a deduction of no less than ten league points, a Premier League record at the time. Everton eventually got the deduction reduced to six points with their appeals.
Burnley argued in court that if the six-point deduction had been applied to the most recent season in which Everton breached the Financial Fair Play rules – i.e. the 2021-2022 season – Burnley would not have been relegated from the Premier League at the end of the season.
At that time, the burgundy were the first club to remain below the relegation line after collecting 35 points during the season. Above the line were Leeds and Everton with their 38 and 39 points.
Everton appealed the decision as soon as possible. Society tells in the announcement published on their website that they are surprised and angry about the decision.
Last season, Everton finished in 13th place in the Premier League. Burnley will head down the league ladder again next season, as it was in 19th place at the end of the season. The other relegated teams were West Ham and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
