Old master Manuel Riemann has extended his expiring contract with Alemannia Aachen by one year. The third division team officially announced this on Wednesday evening. The 37-year-old moved to the Tivoli at the end of January after six months without a club and, after a short start-up phase, became a regular at the end of February – only slowed down by knee problems for three games in April. In nine league games for Alemannia, he only had to reach behind himself seven times and kept his box clean twice.
“We have benefited from Manuel in many ways in the past few months,” said Aachen’s sports director Rachid Azzouzi in a club statement. “He brings enormous experience, calmness in building up the game and at the same time the emotionality that a team needs in crucial phases. He has also quickly established himself as a leader and an important contact for our young players. We are therefore very pleased that he will also be part of our goalkeeping team next season and that we can therefore close another position early on.”
Head coach Mersad Selimbegovic added: “Manuel has an absolute winning mentality. He is present in every training session, challenges his teammates and exemplifies professionalism. He also takes the other players on the pitch and in the dressing room with him.” And Riemann himself said: “I’ve experienced a lot in my career, but the last few months here at the Tivoli have been something very special. After the last game of the season, I already said that I had found the joy of football again at Alemannia. That makes me all the happier to be able to continue my path here and look forward to playing in front of our fans again in the coming season.”
